Israel, Palestine, Bethlehem (built by Constantine the Great). The texts praise the splendour of its mosaics, which also covered the external wall of the church, the earliest date from the seventh century. They were restored in about 1169 on the orders of the emperor Manuel Comnenus by the mosaicist Ephraim. According to Father Quaresimus, who saw the mosaics at the end of the sixteenth century when they were almost all intact, the west wall of the church was covered with mosaics representing the Tree of Jesse, bearing medallions of the prophets who foretold the Nativity. The wall of the nave carried a long frieze of half-length figures representing Christ´s ancestors; inscribed above, between architectural decoration, were summaries of the acts of the seven ecumenical councils. The transept and the choir had scenes from the Gospels, three of which, Entry into Jerusalem, The Doubting of Thomas and the Ascension, have escaped destruction. For the Basilica of the Nativity´s fine mosaics from the seventh century, restored in about 1169, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_Nativity
